With staycations on the rise in recent years, families want more from their UK getaways. Bath is ranked time and time again as one of the top ten places to visit in the UK. This is mostly for its foodie scene with supper clubs, street food, vegan menus but also its range of bougie accommodation.

As Bath residents, we can reveal the prettiest family-friendly foodie spots (and walks) to get cosy-in during colder months or catch those rays during the summer in beautiful pub gardens. Forget queues, crowds and quaint tearooms; every eatery here is off the beaten track from the tens of thousands of tourists, most will feature cinematic views of Bath and all will ensure you’re fed well. Pack your walking boots, waterproofs and sun hats but most of all your appetites for these less obvious but must-visit spots.

    The Inn at Freshford

This incredibly beautiful 16th Century village inn is located on the banks of the River Frome at Freshford, South-East of Bath. The surrounding countryside will take your breath away; the Inn is within The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Beauty favoured for cyclists, joggers and walkers. Think timber beams, open fires and dreamy gardens. If you’re an ale-lover you’ll appreciate the Box Steam Brewery beers on tap. Whilst you’re there, head over to Ilford Manor, which on a sunny day is like being transported to Tuscany. There are over three miles of footpaths running through the manor, with something to enjoy all year round.

    Castle Farm

In a nutshell Castle Farm is rustic, relaxed and uber tasty. Situated in a 45-acre farm South of Bath with panoramic views. The converted barn with open kitchen is the most romantic spot for a family-style brunch, lunch, Friday curry club or Sunday roast. It really is a unique setting for any foodie. Each month the owners research and explore a new theme to create a thoughtful menu with matching wines and cocktails. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views across the Midford Valley, whilst enjoying a glass of something cold.

    Hare & Hounds

High up on the very northern outskirts of Bath is this Victorian pub in Lansdown, with a modern makeover. Enjoy magnificent, long-reaching views of the countryside towards Solisbury Hill. Best appreciated from the picnic tables on outdoor terrace; there’s an outdoor bar in summer with a natural Montessori playground for the win. The food is the big draw – it’s one of Bath's leading gastropubs. It keeps things straightforward with burgers, fish and chips, steaks, roasts on Sundays, and super local Marshfield ice-cream. Ensure you head on over to Lansdown Woods and Beckford Tower for a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Bath to work up or off, that appetite.

    The Packhorse

This dreamy local pub is in South Stoke, a gorgeously small village in South Bath. The pub opened in 1600s when it was an ale house and was saved recently by a community buyout. Inside it is full of beam and outside there’s a spacious, maintained tiered garden brimming with lavender and lots of seating. The food is some of the best pub grub in and around Bath serving your classics of pies, tagines, BBQ ribs and duck breast. Local drinks on tap include Honey’s cider and Butcombe beer. To finish, take a stroll through the gorgeous postcard perfect village, where you can follow the Somerset Coal Canal or River Avon out towards Combe Hay.

    The Wheatsheaf Inn

Park your car at Midford and walk along the old Somerset Coal Canal towards The Wheatsheaf in Combe Hay. The village itself is full of history and was even listed in The Domesday Book of 1085. You’ll be greeted by an idyllic country pub, nestled in the valley, with a large-terraced garden. It’s the perfect place for a long lazy lunch to graze on moules, scallops, pork belly or tuna steaks. Locals love this pub as it’s super dog-friendly, so expect to see a cute pup or two including the owners three cocker spaniels.
